Acting on climate change

Our ambition is to become a net-zero company by 2040

Climate change is the greatest threat facing our planet. Taking action now to help create a sustainable world is the best thing we can do for our customers, business and shareholders.

Our climate ambition

Aviva’s global ambition is to:

  • Become a net-zero company by 2040
  • Have net-zero operations and supply chain by 2030
  • Achieve a 25% reduction in carbon intensity of assets by 2025 and 60% by 2030

A strong record in promoting sustainability

The scope and scale of the environmental crisis demands action. In March 2022, we published our Climate Transition Plan, outlining our intended pathway towards net zero by 2040. Since then, we regularly review our progress towards our sustainability ambition against this plan.

In December 2022, Aviva became the first international composite insurer to have carbon-reduction goals validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)². Aviva also shared its first Biodiversity Report, providing a progress update one year on from launching its Biodiversity Policy.

While we are working towards our sustainability ambition, we acknowledge that when it comes to decarbonizing the economy in which we operate and invest, Aviva is one part of a far larger global ecosystem. There are limits to our ability to influence other organizations and governments. Nevertheless, we remain focused on the task and will continue to play our part in the collective effort to enable the global net-zero transition.

Our partnerships

We can’t solve the climate crisis alone. That’s why we support the work of partners with expertise and influence in their fields, who share our belief that taking urgent action on climate change is critical.
