Our sustainability partnerships

Today’s biggest challenges cannot be solved alone. Our partners’ expertise and influence in their fields are invaluable to delivering our Sustainability Ambition. Together, our organizations’ combined strength can create a force for change.

Nature-based carbon removal

Aviva has prioritized nature-based carbon solutions as part of our ambition to become a net-zero company by 2040. These projects remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and provide a positive contribution to the biodiversity crisis, helping support the resiliency of local communities.

Aviva’s global program of nature-based carbon sequestration projects currently includes two Canadian partners:

Wild + Pine

Aviva’s contribution to Wild + Pine’s StoneWoods Forest Carbon project will cover c. 520 hectares of land in Alberta, Canada, and is projected to sequester c. 275,000 tonnes of carbon over 60 years. The project aims to restore degraded and marginal land back to a forested landscape, remove greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere, and restore habitats in support of regional biodiversity including moose, elk, whitetail and mule deer, black bears, and great grey owls.

Nature Conservancy of Canada

Aviva’s partnership with the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) aims to support targeted restoration, conservation and opportunities for carbon removal projects. In total, the donation is expected to contribute to the conservation and/or restoration of c. 900 hectares (the equivalent of over 1,520 CFL football fields) of grasslands, marshes and forests. Aviva’s donation will also support a study on the carbon sequestering power of tidal marshes in Quebec and Atlantic Canada, which could be leveraged to accelerate future conservation work.

WWF-Canada

Canada is facing the dual crises of biodiversity loss and climate change. That’s why we’ve partnered with the country’s largest international conservation organization, World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF-Canada) to take action.

Aviva Canada has been the presenting partner of WWF-Canada’s Nature and Climate Grant Program since 2021, investing more than $3 million since then to financially support the efforts of local organizations and Indigenous Peoples to restore degraded lands and shorelines to improve habitats and capture carbon.
